Tooth colored restorations are placed by first 'etching' or
priming the tooth surface. The purpose of this is to remove surface impurities
and to create microscopic irregularities to hold the tooth colored filling in.
The average lifespan for these 'composite' restorations is generally
between 5-7 years if oral hygiene is excellent. Failure of the restoration is
due to leakage as it wears down. This becomes evident by dislodging and
loosening of the filling.
